Confusion about the use of certain prepositions

1. By, with

By is used for the person who acts, while with is used for the instrument.

ஒரு வேலை இதனால் செய்யப்பட்டது என்பதைக் குறிப்பிடும்பொழுது, by என்ற preposition எந்த நபரால் செய்யப்பட்டது என்பதைக் குறிப்பிடும் பொழுது பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. With என்ற preposition எந்த பொருளின் உதவியினால் அந்த வேலை செய்யப்பட்டது என்பதைக் குறிப்பிடுகிறது.

An Orange is cut by the knife. - incorrect 
An Orange is cut with a knife  - correct 


Knife - கத்தி என்பது ஒரு பொருளாகும். எனவே with என்ற preposition பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.

The drawer was filled  by books - incorrect 
The drawer was filled with books.  - correct 

You must write by a pen. - incorrect 
You must write  with a pen. - correct 


Note.

The police was killed by a robber with a dagger.
An apple was cut by my sister with a knife. 



கொடுக்கப்பட்ட வாக்கியத்தில் யாரால் ஆப்பிள் நறுக்கப்பட்டது என்ற பொழுது 'அந்த நபரைக்" குறிப்பிடுகிறது.

அதனால் by my mother என்றும், எதனால் வெட்டப்பட்டது என்று கூறும்பொழுது அந்த பொருளை குறிப்பிடுகிறது, எனவே with knife என்றும் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது.

2. With, by

By is used to express the means or the agency of an action. It is also used to indicate the means of travel , transport or conveyance.

Example 

He makes his living with  teaching. - incorrect 
He makes his living  by teaching- correct 

கற்பித்தல் மூலம் அவர் வாழ்க்கை நடத்துகிறார்.

எதன் வழியாக என்ற வினாவிற்கு கற்பித்தல் வருவதால் வாக்கியத்தில் by பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.

We went to the market with car.- incorrect 
We went to the market by car. - correct

Preposition - Part 2

Confusion about the use of certain prepositions

1. She will telephone him on tomorrow. - incorrect
2. She will telephone him tomorrow. - correct

Omission of a preposition before words that can be used both as nouns and adverbs.

ஒரு சொல் பெயர்ச்சொல்லாகவும், வினை உரிச்சொல்லாகவும் வரும் பொழுது அந்த சொல்லுக்கு முன்பு preposition வருவதில்லை. எனவே tomorrow என்ற சொல்லுக்கு முன்பு on பயன்படுத்தக்கூடாது.

2. He promised to meet me on tomorrow morning - incorrect
   He promised to meet me tomorrow morning - correct

3. She resembles to her mother - incorrect
    She resembles her mother - correct

No preposition is required after the verb.
Resembles ஐ அடுத்து இங்கு preposition பயன்படுத்த தேவையில்லை.

4. I met with him yesterday - incorrect
    I met him yesterday  - correct


No preposition is required after transitive verbs.

Transitive verb-ஐ அடுத்து preposition வருவதில்லை.

எனவே met-ஐ அடுத்து with என்ற preposition-ஐ பயன்படுத்த தேவையில்லை.

5. She asked a question to him - incorrect.
    She asked a question him - correct

6. The police caught to him - incorrect
    The police caught him - correct.

7. Please wait for a minute - incorrect.
   Please wait a minute - correct.

Before the expression of time, we don't use preposition.

நேரத்தை சொல்லும் இடத்திற்கு முன்பு preposition வருவதில்லை.

8. He will be twenty-one in next June - incorrect.
    He will be twenty-one next June - correct.

9. She met him on last Sunday. - incorrect
    She met him last Sunday. - correct

10. I will meet him on next Monday.- incorrect
      I will meet him next Monday - correct.
    
When a noun that has a time reference (day, month) is preceded by an adjective, no preposition is required. In the above examples, the time references are preceded by the adjectives like next, last etc.

மேலே கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள வாக்கியங்களில் நேரத்தை குறிக்க பயன்படும் வார்த்தைகளுக்கு முன்பும், நாட்கள் மற்றும் மாதங்களை குறிக்கும் வார்த்தைகளுக்கு முன்பும் adjective ஆன last, next என்ற வார்த்தைகள் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன. அந்த adjective-க்கு முன்பு preposition பயன்படுத்த அவசியமில்லை.

Confusion about the use of certain prepositions

Between

When between is used to link two points of time, it must be followed by and, not by to.

Between என்ற preposition-ஐ இரண்டு நேரங்களை இணைப்பதற்காக பயன்படுத்தும் பொழுது அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து and என்ற வார்த்தைதான் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும். To என்ற வார்த்தையை பயன்படுத்தக்கூடாது.

Examples

  1. The meeting will be held between 3 to 6 pm - incorrect.
  2. The meeting will be held between 3 pm and 6 pm.- correct
  1. He was listening to the music between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. -incorrect
  2. He was listening to the music between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. - correct
  1. The office is closed for lunch between 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. -incorrect
  2. The office is closed for lunch between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. - correct

Between, among

Between is used in speaking of two persons or things; among refers to more than two persons or things.

இரண்டு பொருட்களையோ மற்றும் இரண்டு நபர்களையோ தொடர்புபடுத்தும் பொழுது between என்ற preposition பயன்படுத்தப்படும்.

இரண்டுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட பொருட்களையோ நபர்களையோ குறிப்பிடும்பொழுது among என்ற preposition பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்.

  1. A quarrel arose between the four sisters - incorrect
  2. A quarrel arose among the four sisters - correct
  1. He distributed the sweets among Raju and Gopal.- incorrect
  2. He distributed the sweets between Raju and Gopal. - correct


There are only two specimens.

  1. We have to choose among the two - incorrect.
  2. We have to choose between the two - correct.
  1. She quickly disappeared between the crowd - incorrect
  2. She quickly disappeared among the crowd - correct

Preposition - Part 4

Omission of a preposition where it is required - Preposition தேவைப்படும் இடங்களில் பயன்படுத்தாமல் வருவதால் ஏற்படும் தவறுகள்.

  1. She picked the pieces of chalk found on the floor - incorrect
  2. She picked up the pieces of chalk found on the floor- correct
  1. The students said the teacher - incorrect
  2. The students said to the teacher - correct
  1. He turned the radio - incorrect
  2. He turned on the radio - correct
  1. Time and Tide wait none - incorrect
  2. Time and Tide wait for none - correct
  1. They are made each other - incorrect
  2. They are made for each other - correct
  1. She described / treated / classified him a liar - incorrect
  2. She described / treated / classified him as a liar - correct

Some verbs which do not take prepositions - சில வினைச் சொற்களை தொடர்ந்து preposition வருவதில்லை

lack, approach , enter, discuss, many, resemble, order, regret , request, emphasize, stress.

  1. The naughty boys were not allowed to enter into the class - incorrect
  2. The naughty boys were not allowed to enter the class - correct
  1. Although he is clever, he lacks of experience. - incorrect
  2. Although he is clever, he lacks experience. - correct
  1.  Raja discussed about the tour yesterday - incorrect

He accompanied  with his friends to college. -incorrect

("arrive at" is used for buildings, particular place and part of buildings)
arrive-ஐ தொடர்ந்து at வரும்பொழுது, அது கட்டிடங்களுக்கும், கட்டிடத்தின் சில பகுதிகளுக்கும், சில குறிப்பிட்ட இடங்களை சொல்லும் பொழுதும் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.

She arrived at Chennai - incorrect
She arrived in Chennai  - correct

("arrived in" is used for towns, cities and countries)
arrive in என்ற வார்த்தை நகரங்கள் மற்றும் நாடுகளை குறிப்பிடும் இடங்களில் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்.

WORDS FOLLOWED BY APPROPRIATE PREPOSITIONS

The use of the appropriate prepositions is a matter of practice and familiarity with the language. A list of prepositions to be used with different parts of speech is given below.

The learners should familiarize themselves with more words and the relevant prepositons to be used with them.

சரியான prepositions (முன்னிடைச் சொற்கள்) நாம் வாக்கியத்தில் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டுமென்றால் ஆங்கிலத்தில் புத்தகங்கள் நிறைய படிக்க வேண்டும். எவ்வாறு முன்னிடைச்சொற்களை (prepositions) மற்ற வார்த்தைகளுடன் அதாவது adjective, verb, adverb, noun போன்ற பிரிவுகளின் வார்த்தைகளுடன் எவ்வாறு பயன்படுத்தலாம் என்பதன் பட்டியல் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Prepositions with verbs - முன்னிடைச் சொற்கள் வினைச்சொற்களுடன் சேர்ந்து வரும் சொற்றொடற்கள் (phrases).

At : aim, laugh, gaze, look, smile, stare, gaze, glance, wonder, hint.

Examples

Students should aim at first class.

I look at the picture hanging on the wall.
She stares at him for a long time before she answers.

Against : rebel, warn, guard, lean, offend

Examples

He rebelled against his father.
His consultant warned him against such a risky investment.
The ladder was leaning against the wall.
Their behaviors offended against the local customs.

For : wait, apologize, compensate, feel, hope, long, pray, send

Examples

We wait for the results.
My aunt apologized for her mistake.
I really feel for the parents who lost their child.
I'll pray for you.

From : alight, borrow, derive, differ, escape prevent, save, separate

Examples

I borrowed two books from my friend.
Many English words derive from Latin.
Our tastes differ from each other.
We were prevented from entering the site.

In : believe, excel, absorb, confide, participate, involve

Examples

He does not believe in the existence of ghosts.
There is no one here I can confide in.
He involved in political activities.
