COVID-19 is a pandemic. Billions of people are being affected and millions of people are being infected. We can’t go outside and play, school is closed and we can’t visit family and friends. The novel coronavirus has caused many loved ones to be mourned and missed. But is it as bad as it seems? Covid-19 has also caused some very good things to happen. Like a healing earth, new technology, and community engagement.

Upon the recent worldwide quarantines and lockdowns, we have collectively significantly cut down on emissions. These cutbacks are helping the ozone layer recover faster then us humans would have been able to do. That is if we were going to do anything in the first place. Anyways, the ozone layer isn’t the only part of this beautiful world we live in that’s getting better. Our oceans, rivers, and lakes they are becoming cleaner and more suitable for ocean life. Hopefully the ocean life will have a baby boom and be the start of helping the natural order of life be restored. If the natural order of life be restored it would mean that many endangered species, like polar bears, tigers, pandas, and rhinos will no longer be endangered as well as the hundreds of other endangered animals.

COVID-19 has caused many people to be anxious, stressed, lonely and possibly depressed. That’s why many companies are taking the lead in creating new apps and websites for people to go to and perhaps relieve themselves for any stresses and anxieties. Other companies and people are helping out governments to help the critically ill COVID-19 patients. In Singapore, the government had help from local tech companies to launch an app called TraceTogether. The app uses Bluetooth signals between smartphones to see if potential carriers of COVID-19 have been in close contact with other people. Thanks to these types of inventions, some countries have been able to slow down the rate of infection and focus on finding a cure.

There are countless stories of good people offering to pick up groceries or help with other tasks for neighbours — and even strangers — who are unable to leave their homes. This is one example of how many communities are coming together to help those who are more vulnerable in this emergency. Despite quarantines and social distancing, connections are still being made all around the world. During the lockdown in Italy, some of those quarantined are lifting their spirits and others through music or dance, another wonderful piece of evidence that communities are coming together to become one. To help people stay connected through this self-isolation period, some musicians and bands are offering free concerts online.

I think that if people keep doing these acts of kindness, governments across the world will see these types of actions and hopefully the world will come together as one and live in peace and happiness.

COVID-19 is scary. We should all be cautious and try to stay home as much as we can, and keep our distance when we must go outside. The novel coronavirus is an evolving situation and has caused sad things to happen like death and illness. We should not denote the severity of the situation, but we should remember that COVID-19 has caused some very good things to happen to us. Like a healing earth, new technology and community engagement.

Plastic to be burned

Plastic bags are a major cause of environmental pollution. Plastic as a substance is non-biodegradable and thus plastic bags remain in the environment for hundreds of years polluting it immensely. It has become very essential to ban plastic bags before they ruin our planet completely.
Many countries around the globe have either put a ban on the plastic bag or Levi tax on it. However, the problem hasn’t been solved completely because the implementation of these measures hasn’t been as successful.

Problems Caused by Plastic Bags

Here are some of the problems caused by plastic bags:

Non-Biodegradable

Plastic bags are non-biodegradable. Thus, disposing of the plastics is the biggest challenge. T

Deterioration of Environment

They are destroying nature due to their harmful effect. Plastic bags have become the main cause of land pollution today. The plastic bags entering into the water bodies are a major cause of water pollution. Hence we can conclude that these are deteriorating our environment in every possible way.

Harmful for Animals and Marine Creatures

Animals and marine creatures unknowingly consume plastic particles along with their food. Research shows that waste plastic bags have been a major reason for untimely animal deaths.

Cause of Illness in Humans

The production of plastic bags releases toxic chemicals. These are the main cause of serious illness. The polluted environment is a major reason for various diseases which are spreading easily in human beings.

Clogged Sewage

Waste plastic bags are the main reason for trapping the drains and sewers, especially during rains. This can result in a flood-like situation and disrupt the normal life of people.

Why water is important?

Water is one of the best gifts from God to humans on this planet. There will be no life without water. Water is the most needed or significant for all living beings. More than 70 % of the earth’s area is covered with water in different forms.

We use water for drinking, cooking purposes, cleaning, and many other purposes. We get water from different sources like rivers, wells, lakes, rain, and many other sources. Water is also essential for industrial use and a need for industries to grow. It is used in agriculture to irrigate crops or lands to cultivate food and also used to water plants at gardens or homes. Water is essential for our domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes. We use clean and pure water for drinking and cooking purposes.

Water is an essential natural resource for us to live, but nowadays, the clean water level is decreasing day by day, and we should save it for the future.

SIGIRIYA 169 KM (105 Miles) From Colombo, Sri Lanka

Sigiriya also known as the Lion's Rock is a rock fortress and a palace located in the Matale district of Sri Lanka. This ruin is surrounded by gardens, ponds and other structures. Sigiriya was built by King Kassapa and it is included as a World Heritage site. Sigiriya is the best preserved city centre in Asia.

History

History

Earlier is was a rock-shelter mountain monastery which was donated by Buddhist devotees. Later King Kassapa renovated it by building gardens and palace. After his death it was again used as a monastery.

Human habilitation in Sigiriya at its earliest was found to be nearly five thousand years during the Mesothilic period.

Rock inscriptions are carved near the drip ledges on many of the shelters, recording the donation of the shelters to the Buddhist monastic order as residences. These have been made within the period between the third century B.C and the first century A.D.

In 1831 Major Jonathan Forbes of the 78th Highlanders of the British army while returning on horseback from a trip to Polonnaruwa came across the "bush covered summit of Sigiriya". Sigiriya came to the attention of antiquarians and later archaeologists.

The Sigiriya complex itself consists of the central rock and two rectangular precincts which are surrounded by two moats and three ramparts. The city is based on a square module.

Structure of The Lion Rock

Structure of The Lion Rock

The Sigiriya Rock is actually a hardened magma plug from an extinct volcano. The most significant feature of the rock would be the Lion staircase leading to the palace garden. The Lion could be visualized as a huge figure towering against the granite cliff. The opened mouth of the Lion leads to the staircase built of bricks and timber. However the only remains of this majestic structure are the two paws and the masonry walls surrounding it. Nevertheless the cuts and groves in the rock face give an impression of a lion figure.

Frescos

Frescos

There are only two pockets of paintings covering most of the western face of the rock. The ladies depicted in the paintings have been identified as Apsaras. However a lot of these ladies have been wiped out when the palace was again converted into a monastery so as to not to disturb meditation.

The Gardens

The Gardens

The gardens are amongst the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. The gardens are divided into three distinct but linked forms; water gardens, Cave and boulder gardens, and terraced gardens.

The Mirror Wall

The Mirror Wall

Originally this wall was so well polished that the king could see himself whilst he walked alongside it. Made of a kind of porcelain, the wall is now partially covered with verses scribbled by visitors to the rock. Well preserved, the mirror wall has verses dating from the 8th century. People of all types wrote on the wall, on varying subjects such as love, irony, and experiences of all sorts. Further writing on the mirror wall has now been banned.

Absolute Success is Luck. Relative Success is Hard Work.

In 1997, Warren Buffett, the famous investor and multi-billionaire, proposed a thought experiment

Imagine that it is 24 hours before you are going to be born,” he said, “and a genie comes to you.”

“The genie says you can determine the rules of the society you are about to enter and you can design anything you want. You get to design the social rules, the economic rules, the governmental rules. And those rules are going to prevail for your lifetime and your children's lifetime and your grandchildren's lifetime.”

“But there is a catch,” he said.

“You don't know whether you're going to be born rich or poor, male or female, infirm or able-bodied, in the United States or Afghanistan. All you know is that you get to take one ball out of a barrel with 5.8 billion balls in it. And that's you.”

“In other words,” Buffett continues, “you're going to participate in what I call the Ovarian Lottery. And that is the most important thing that's ever going to happen to you in your life. It's going to determine way more than what school you go to, how hard you work, all kinds of things.”

Buffett has long been a proponent for the role of luck in success. In his 2014 Annual Letter, he wrote, “Through dumb luck, [my business partner] Charlie and I were born in the United States, and we are forever grateful for the staggering advantages this accident of birth has given us.”

When explained in this way, it seems hard to deny the importance of luck, randomness, and good fortune in life. And indeed, these factors play a critical role. But let's consider a second story.

Dog cafe in Los Angeles

A café opens in Los Angeles. It is a dog café. There are dogs in the café. You can have a cup of coffee. You can play with the dogs.

All of the dogs are from shelters. They have no homes. You can adopt the dogs. Dogs in some shelters are put to sleep. The owner of the café does not like this. She saves the dogs. She helps the dogs and finds them new homes.

People like the café. You pay 10 dollars to get one coffee and 55 minutes with the dogs.

Difficult words: shelter (a place where people put homeless dogs), put to sleep (to kill), owner (the person who owns – has something).

Little Wombat is Saved

This news is from Tasmania. A woman sees a dead wombat on the road. She goes up to it. She sees that its pouch is moving. There is a baby wombat inside!

She helps the baby out of the pouch. It is cold so she puts it in a towel. Another woman takes care of the baby wombat. She keeps it in her bra. This keeps the baby warm. Also, it feels like a pouch to the baby. The baby spends three months in the bra.

Difficult words: wombat (an animal with a pouch which lives in Australia), pouch (a pocket on animals like wombats, kangaroos and koalas for carrying babies), take care (to help).
